Survey Discussion

Trying to keep the survey clean, I wanted to comment:

I don’t understand how a lot of you have such low hours on your mowers. With my schedule my yard usually looks great but sometimes it still struggles with spring time growth and then you can notice lots of missed spots.

That's a good question, maybe we should take pics of our yards and share.  Even with my bot getting stuck at the beginning of every season due to the ground shifting, my back yard always looks perfect.  I'll be honest, it still amazes me that these things actually work as well as they do, being a random bump and go system.

I live in the Chicago burbs, have mine programmed to run 8:30am - 10:30pm every day, but I didn't see it out at all yesterday, and when I looked at it this morning, it won't be out till 4:30-ish today.

Jerry, maybe you need to section your lawn off into 3 areas and not use the auto feature.  My bot spends one hour per day mowing one area.  Since it is restrained to that one area it completes more circles than it did when there were no restrictions.  Now and then it will escape to the next area but by then it has the lawn looking good.  Of course my lawn is not big so that makes a big difference.

I know part of the reason I have higher hours is because I have a complicated setup(.33 acres with 1500 feet of wire with some tough to get to spots and lots of obstacles). I have it sectioned into three zones with the bot usually mowing 2 times a day four days a week and I don't have the auto feature. So with my situation I figured my hours would be higher then people with similar size yards but I was not expecting that much of a difference.

Rahulko,

Correct me if I am wrong but I figure that you have around 2600 hours on your mower. That is amazing and also how more of the old models should have performed four years with no major problems(I don't count the motherboard since the only reason it was replaced was for the upgrade) just a blade and a battery. That is what makes it sometimes hard to determine how big of an issue things are when looking at a forum because you know that if you see a trend of common problems that there are plenty more people having the same problems that are just not posting it but you have no idea how many people aren't having any issues because they generally don't bother with the forums. Obviously with the motors there was enough of an issue for the company to make changes. But I tend to believe RobotLady when she says that there are a lot of customers with no motor problems because of her good reputation she has with her customers compared to other dealers that said about the same thing I just figured they where trying to make a big problem look like a very small issue.

Jerry,

Good point. I my case, my hour counter was reset to zero when I sent Julius to have his main board replaced due to the recall in 2008. Then, I only put him back to work in the spring of 2009, so the number I gave is really since 2009 till now. But, other than the main board, Julius still has his original motors since I bought him (??) in 2005.

Regards.

Model: LB2150
Purchased: February 2009
Yard size: .33
Seasons Completed: 1
Hours Mowed: 760
No Parts Replaced

Honestly, I don't know what to believe anymore.  I know there aren't a ton of these mowers out there.  At the same time, I can't believe that I (and others complaining about the motors on these and other forums) could "just happen" to get bad motors.  And, even when receiving replacements, them having the same problem.

On top of that, the design of the blade motor doesn't allow for reasonable end user maintenance.  With less than 500 hours on my motor and the brushes already wearing out, someone with 2400 hours on their bot must have changed the brushes 4 times already, right?  And I don't want to even start ranting about a $500 replacement motor price!  Do a quick search on products in the $500 price range and you can't tell me that the R&D, parts, manufacturing, etc. warrant that product costing a consumer $500 and something as simple as these motors, with specs equal to a $50 motor costing us $500.  It's like they realize that after they price gouged the heck out of us on the initial investment, we must be stupid enough to spend $500 on a simple motor.

After hearing about the legal dealing between Husqvarna and Zucchetti, it no longer surprises me.  Many "knock-offs"  tend to use less quality parts without understanding the reason behind the true designers reasons for choosing what they chose.  You then play catchup trying to redesign what you stole into a reasonably reliable product.

Jerry,

I think your approximate figure is correct. Frankly, until I saw the posts around here, I was completely oblivious about the motor issues some folks have reported. My mower has been reliable and solid, and his motors so far seem to have no damage nor performance loss compared to when I just got him, five years ago. Perhaps I was lucky? But I don't much believe in luck, only in statistics, and rather think there is a silent majority happily seeing their lawns taken care of by their robots every season. Still, the only way to find out for sure would be to do a large scale survey, or to rely on the vendors' problem reports, if they are willing to share them with customers...

I would like to hear from Lawnbott owners that are suppose to be running trouble free. It would be nice to know what they are doing that most on this form are not doing.

I hope that Lawnbott Tunes in to some of the problems that we are having and take time to look at the suggestions that have been presented.

It is everyone's best interest that these problems be solved, for the bulk of the buying public will not put up with these problems.  The public will soon hear of these problems and will stay with the walk behind or rider Mowers, that will run for year with no maintenance Gas, Oil, a little grease and sharpen the blade maybe once a year.

If this occurs, do not expect the price or cost of these robots to go down.

If you own or know someone that has a Lawnbott running with no problems, please post some info.

Knowing what I know now, I find it hard to believe that the brushes on the blade motor are even capable of holding up to 2600 hours of use with mine having under 500 hours and already being warn out.
