Spotty mowing in the middle
« on: April 30, 2015, 05:42:49 PM »
Hi folks,
I usually end up with the outer part of an area well-mowed, but the middle region...not so much.  I have two questions:

1.  My yard is set up with the Primary and 3 Secondary Areas and one work schedule from 1000-2100.  The bott will spend all it’s time in one area until the battery low message comes on.  Today it mowed 7 hrs 15 min in Secondary Area 2, then went back to recharge, but the area wasn't fully mowed.  How does the Bott know when it is done with an area?

2.  Even though  the Bott spent over 7 hrs in SA2 today, the central part only had a few straight-thru swaths, but the outer edges are well-mowed.  The central part makes up roughly 20% of the total area in SA2's ¼ acre.  I notice when the Bott heads into the central area, it usually triggers spiral mode.  When the spiral mode ends, the Bott always heads away from the central area.  As a result, it rarely makes any deep penetrations into the central part of the area.  I know I can disable spiral mode, but is there any way to adjust how many spirals it does?
Thanks!

My 3200 has two setting for spiral mode, random spiral or spiral when it hits high grass.  Set your bot for spiral when it hits high grass if you have it set for random.  It may pay you to cut the yard up into more pieces so the distant between perimeter wires is shorter.  That would mean you would have to use a switch and some additional wiring to flip from one section of 4 areas to another section of 4 areas.

Make a drawing that is close to scale and post it here.  Maybe one of us can come up with a fix.

If the bot has only started mowing then you can expect missed spots all over the lawn.  The next time it goes out it gets a few more of the missed spots.  After a while you will see that it's nicely mowed.

I think your wheels may be turning at different rates.  What you are describing is not normal.  The robots are really good at getting the whole yard mowed, not just the middle.

Try going into the service menu and run the motor test.  Pay attention to the numbers, they should be similar.  Also, when you run the test, the wheels should turn at around the same rate.

Check the wheels for grass build-up (front and rear) or that something is not turning freely (like a stuck front wheel).  Something is not right...

Hi, is your problem solved?  If the wheels turn at the same rate, you can also look into wiring a zone to change the maneuvering pattern of the robot.  A gate that goes partway up to the center might be all you need.  Just something to make the robot turn around on its own.  Toolbelt is an expert at gates.  Contact him for help.
