Lubricant type used in Planetary Gears for Wheel Motors?
« on: July 08, 2015, 09:40:29 AM »
Greetings All,

Can anyone comment on what type and grade of lubricant is used in the Planetary Gears for the Wheel motors of the 32xx and 35xx series?

While troubleshooting my dying/dead brushed wheel motor from my 3510/3550 - I disassembled the planetary gear assembly to check if there was a broken gear, etc that could be causing the motor additional stress and odd noises - Found nothing odd - just that the grease looked really dirty (a really dark brown) - I "flushed" it out with 0w20 motor oil - I did this for each of the three "layer" of gears until I got most of the grease chunks out and the oil came out somewhat translucent.  I then reinstalled each layer of gears and repacked each layer with SAE 90 grease (same type used in CV joints in automobiles) - It seems to be operating fine with the new motor - however I noticed during the diagnostics wheel test - the new wheel with the planetary gear set I just cleaned and lubricated - was about 8-10% slower than the original wheel when tested at 100%  - roughly 4% difference when at 70% - no difference up to 50%.  It should spin equal to or faster than the other older/original IMS42 motor?  I am pretty sure I did not overpack the grease as I left airspace in each layer so the gears/grease can more freely move - This leads me to think perhaps the grease I used may have been too heavy or maybe just all together the wrong type?

Thanks in advance!,

Bob

You may want to try Lithium grease, also known as White Grease.  Wikipedia.org site has a good description.

Hi, unfortunately the manufacturer does not provide us with information on the best grease to use inside the motors.  Google is probably your best friend with this issue.  Do let us know what you find out!
