Robomower Pegs are much better than lawnbott pegs
« on: July 11, 2010, 07:32:53 AM »
Before my Lawnbott, I owned a robomower.  I pulled, saved and recycled the robomower pegs when I moved from my old house and got the Lawnbott.

I have found that the robomower pegs not only hold the wire in the ground much better, but they break less often.  The robomower peg even tightens up the perimeter wire nicely as you hammer it in the last little bit.  The only time that I've ever had one break was when it hit a root or a rock

I find that the lawnbott stakes break about 30% of the time that you put them in or remove them.  Sometime they hammer all of the way into the ground and then the last tap with the rubber mallet breaks the head off.  Very frustrating.

I'd call the robomower peg a Porsche and the lawnbott peg a pinto.

Lawnbott pegs: 200 for $45, which is $.23 per peg

Robomower pegs: 50 for $30, which is $.50 per peg ($.60)

My opinion would be that you are better off paying a little more for a much better peg.

Just another lack of quality showing up for lawnbott.

It is another item of lawnbott that has a Rolls Royce price with Yogo Quality. and that is a shame as when the bott is working it is a good little machine.  Hope some day the can improve on the reliability.

Let me share a product that I found that is much better, cheaper and faster for laying wire. I have used it and have on hand a stapler that I would loan out.  I would only ask for you to pay shipping and place a returnable deposit, as the stapler is quite expensive.   Here it is....  http://www.gemplers.com/search/sod+stapler
they also have pegs  4" and 6" bio degradable  1000 for $176 for the 4".  They do work.  this spring I did not have any wire come up.

I like to use more pegs than the book says to use. The Robomower pegs are too expensive for me and are much harder to remove if you need to move your wire. The Lawnbott pegs can be easily cut down at each taper point which will offer much less chance of breaking. Soil type probably makes a differences too but I would much rather use Lawnbott pegs for ease of adjustment.

If you look at the cost differences I don't think its “Rolls Royce price with Yogo Quality” when the Robomower pegs are more than twice the cost. I think it boils down to personal preference.

Agreed with personal preference. I think pegging sucks in general and prefer to bury my wire.  ;)

I found I couldn't just peg it because of the bermuda/st augustine just doesn't give a place to get to the ground withough chopping it up in alot of places. I think it's just my evil lawn but alot of places I buried my wire the grass outside and inside my wire right nearby died which well caused it's own issues  :-[ It is pretty much back now so that is good.
I pegged it too though I just used a icepick to pre-drill the hole that was smaller then the peg and mostly had no problems at all.
That sod stapler I wish I had known about. I think I can rent one locally since they do so much sod work around here sure would have done a nice job securing the line down.

Hey gang,
Stop with the Rolls Royce Pegs..   http://www.gemplers.com/search/sod

I have some pegs that I would sell if you don't want to get a 1000,  I have used both the stapler and the pegs and can attest that they work.
1000 for $176 for the 4".  the staples work out to about 5 cents each.

Maybe a stupid question, but why not just use lawn fabric pegs or staples?  The only difference with the pegs is that they don't have the two little teeth on each side of the top, but they still seem to hold the wire down fine if you put them on the inside of the wire.

But, don't take my word for it, as I only have a few sections that are pegged down.  90% of my wire is buried.

Using pegs made it easier to bury my wire. I only did about an inch or so but due to the mini rolling hill nature of my lawn it made it alot easier to keep it under and also keeps the double up wire together better.
