Summer Storage?
« on: August 09, 2011, 10:22:37 AM »
Ok so in winter you want to top off the battery either with the kit or by popping into the charger every so often if you don't have snow/ice issues.
What about summer though?
I think our growing season was cut short in the are this year due to the dryest year on record and nearly hottest average temps for a summer or some such so I had for a while just put chopper on pause since he does have shade all day.
After the 2nd or 3rd day of 105+ temps I put him in the workshop which is about 85-90 degrees because that sealed chamber with all the electronics and motors really heats up.
Is there anything else I can/should do? Just pretend it's winter plus keep it out of the extreme heat/sun and make sure no bugs/animals try and live in there?

I guess the good news is I've only had 2 problems this year the first with casters taking out the first few weeks of growing in april and the second with the blade motor going which took out another few weeks so there wasn't much cutting except by me and my push mower. The bad news is I think it'll take me out of the warrantee cycle of parts so I hope this time they got it right  :-X

My guess would be that you could leave it off until it gets cooler and the growing season starts again.  When it's time, put it back in the charger, let it charge to full, and start your mowing cycle again.  I'd like to think it won't be more than a month or two (but your climate may vary).

I haven't been here in TX for long but my guess would be there won't be any growth till April 2012. Usually chopper only has 3-4 months of cutting this year it looks like it was 3-4 weeks with downtime.
So to revise my question if I'm storing from June - April (or longer if the grass doesn't come back) is there anything additional or is the winter protocol good for indefinate storage? I understand the batteries have a calendar life but I don't think it is worth the step of trying to store them in a fridge/freezer to extend that since the costs would probably wash out.

In the winter starting around November (zone 7) I bring Jr. inside and every 2-3 months connect up the winter charger for about 15 minutes or so. The lowest I've seen is 2700 and it doesn't take anytime for him to recharge.  If you don't have a winter charger just take him back outside to his charger for a few minutes.  You could do that all year long if you wanted to.  That would amount to 3-4 times between now and April of next year.  Hope you have your plants on a drip system.
